Born at Warnmarnjulugun Lagoon, Lena Nyadbi grew up at Old Lissadell Station, where she was put to work at an early age. Although preoccupation with other community work kept her from beginning to paint until 1998, she had spent a number of years studying the practice of different Warmun artists, especially Paddy Jaminji, from whom it was she learned the technique of grinding ochre and charcoal and hand-rubbing the charcoal into the canvas.
