Leopold Verguet

One of a group of French Marist priests who visited Sydney in 1845 en route to a new mission in the Solomon Islands. Verguet made some pencil sketches during his stay in Sydney, including one of the newly completed St Patrick's Church and his sketch is the earliest known depiction of the building.

sketcher and priest, came to Sydney in 1845, one of a group of French Marist priests en route to a new mission on the Solomon Islands. The order had just established a house at Woolloomooloo as a base for Marist missionaries in the Pacific and while staying there Father Verguet made some pencil sketches, including one of the newly completed St Patrick’s Church, Church Hill (Marist Archives, Rome), the earliest known depiction of the building. Verguet’s Un Naturel des Îles Salomen , described as 'a rough sketch of a barbarian head – rather cleverly handled’, was lent by the French consul to Sydney’s 1847 exhibition of the Society for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Australia.
