Louis de Gouges Wood was a painter, sketcher and teacher, was the elder son of Captain William Wood, a soldier who settled at Snakebanks, now Powranna, near Launceston, Tasmania, and Marie Hyacinthe Geneviéve, née de Gouges, from Longwy, Lorraine, France, daughter of a former Brigade General Pierre Aubry de Gouges of French Guiana from 1802 to his death in early 1803.
