¶ Marlie was educated at the Riverton Primary School and Riverton High School before moving to Adelaide to attend the South Australian School of Fine Arts where she remained for two years, studying full-time under F. Millward Grey, Jacqueline Hick, Mary Harris and Travis Webber. She then commenced employment as an art teacher at Unley High School where she taught for a year. In 1948, she married Bernhard Basedow and left teaching to raise her family of three sons, Peter (b.1948), David (b.1952) and Martin (b.1962). ¶ ¶ In 1970, Marlie resumed art studies part-time at the SA School of Fine Arts, completing general drawing, life drawing, and painting. Lecturers during this time included Cecil Hardy, Helen James and Adam Kriegel. She also undertook two years of instruction in etching, screen and relief printing. From 1974, Marlie attended classes in printmaking at the TAFE College, O’Halloran Hill. ¶ ¶ In 1976, several years after her divorce from Bern Basedow, Marlie married Friedrich (Fritz) Unmuth.
