Putland's father Governor William Bligh described her work as 'some little fancy drawings.' He was not so condensing when, barely a fortnight after her husband's death, the widowed Mary Putland attempted to bar the entry of Major Johnston and his troops to Government House when they came to arrest her father. She remained with him in his confinement.
