Matthew Fern was a woodcarver of exceptional skills who flourished in Queensland during the second half of the nineteenth century. It is difficult to extract information of Australia's colonial cabinet-makers without trying to document individual workers. However, the individual style of journeyman wood-carvers makes it possible to trace their work through individual cabinet-making workshops.
