Mattie Hodgson was born in 1909 into a family which encouraged girls creative endeavours. Her aunt, the artist Edith Ward, introduced her to photography. By 1924 the family had moved from Victoria to Perth in Western Australia, and it was here she was given her first camera. The next year she began to work as a receptionist and retoucher at Perth’s Ruskin Studios.
