Victorian Academy of Arts fifth exhibition 1875: “In this year’s collection, two of the best subjective paintings are Caught at Last by Miss Bullen and Who Fights my Dog Fights Me by Mr Cyrus Mason. Caught at Last represents a hare lying dead at the feet of two dogs. The execution, as far as the dogs are concerned, is excellent, but the hare has far the worst of it, both from the dogs and the artist also. As a whole, however, the production is very good” ( Sydney Mail , 10 July 1875).
