Mr and Mrs Batts are thought to be a married couple who worked together as teachers in Hobart. In 1833 they advertised their services, offering lessons in drawing and dressmaking.
teachers, advertised in the Hobart Town Courier on 11 October 1833: 'Government school house Sorell – teaching rudiments of drawing, if required. Also art of dressmaking and millinery by one of the best hands in the colony (to whom the English and Parisian fashions are sent).’
