The Archibald Prize for portraiture was established at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1921 under the terms of the will of J.F, Archibald. It has proved to be more popular with the general public than the critics, and can be used to track approaches to both art and Society.
The prize is judged by the Trustees of the gallery
