Naval sketcher and diarist, served on HM Alligator in Australian and New Zealand waters in 1834. He kept a full account of several cruises he made in the western Pacific and along the Australian coast, which provided the subject matter for some very accomplished watercolour and pen and ink sketches, e.g. Ball’s Pyramid bearing N.W. 1834, watercolour. They are included in 'A General Remark Book by N.C. Phillips R.N.’ 1828-35 (Mitchell Library, A1955).
