cartoonist, drew cartoons at Ipswich, Qld in the 1850s according to Nehemiah Bartley (1830-1894) in his posthumous Australian Pioneers and Reminiscences (ed. J.J. Knight), published in 1896, which states (p.397): 'In 1855 Ipswich started a newspaper under the Bays Brothers, and comic sketches appeared at the time from the pen of Lieutenant Nicoll’. (Bartley also notes that in the late fifties, John Kent, formerly of the Commissariat Department, 'edited the Ipswich paper and was a pungent writer (in the Thady O’Kane style).’
