Painter and collage artist. Born in 1954 in Birmingham, England, Higgs studied painting at the Winchester School of Art in England from 1975 to 1977. Throughout 1980 and 1981 Higgs completed a study tour of Easter Island, Peru, Mexico, Yucatan, New York, Washington, United Kingdom, Europe, Greece and Egypt with painter Ron Lambert.
In 1978 Higgs was awarded the Lloyd Rees Drawing Prize at Port Kembla and in 1983 he won a New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship which enabled him to undertake a six month residency with Patrick Herron in Cornwall, England and an eight month residency at the New South Wales Paris Studio, France which he undertook throughout 1984. That same year he was awarded the Dyson Bequest and in 1997 he won the Campbelltown Art Prize. Higgs has most recently completed a study tour of Italy and France between 2006 and 2007.
In 2006 Leeuwin Estate, Western Australia, selected Higgs’ work for their Art Series Sauvignon Blanc wine label. Higgs’ work is represented in public and private collections, including The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artbank, The Australian Club, New England Regional Art Museum, Newcastle Region Art Gallery, Wollongong City Art Gallery, Wollongong University Collection, Campbelltown City Art Gallery and Leeuwin Estate Winery.
