professional photographer of French and English descent, worked in Sydney during the 1860s, first for Freeman Brothers then as manager of the London Photographic Company at 419 George Street. At Freemans he met and married Emily Bentley , who was a colourist there. They moved to Newcastle in about 1870 and Mott took over Smithers 's Hunter Street photographic establishment, advertising the opening of his gallery, 'constructed on scientific principles so as to secure the best artistic effect of light and shade’, in the Newcastle and Maitland Business Directory and Almanac for 1871.
The Cazneaus moved to New Zealand in 1876 and Mott became a partner in a photographic studio known as Cazneau & Connolly. Their son, Harold Cazneaux (who added an 'x’ to his surname when he too became a photographer), was born in Wellington on 30 March 1878. Settling in Adelaide in the late 1880s Mott worked as manager for Townsend Duryea then for Hammer & Co. The NGA holds his gelatin silver photograph of the lavish reception room in Hammer’s studio (1890).
