Ricardo Idagi, born in 1957, is from Meriam Mer, also known as Murray Island in the Torres Straits, Queensland. Like his uncles and grandfathers, Idagi is a songman, painter and carver. He also works as a rock sculptor and ceramicist. His work is informed by the artefacts and cultural traditions of the Torres Strait Islands. He states in the publication Tribal Expressions: The Business of Art and Culture in Indigenous Victoria (Ed, Jane Harrison) that his work is concerned with underwater themes, “Not just the fishes but about the mythical elements, because our laws come from the sea.”
