A painter, shipowner and merchant, Porter settled down in New Zealand in 1841 after a brief stay in Australia. Exhibited with the Auckland Society of Artists in 1875.
painter, shipowner and merchant, brought two ships (and his wife and children) from Liverpool to Australia in 1839. He landed at Port Lincoln, South Australia, then sailed via Sydney and Hobart Town to Auckland (NZ) where he settled in 1841. Captain Porter exhibited work with the Auckland Society of Artists in 1875 but is not known to have painted during his brief stay in Australia.
