Biography <p>Children's comic book artist, drew stories for younger children. <i>_The Young Knight: A Story of the Third Crusade</i>_ published in Capers Comics (c.1948) is described in Shiell as:</p> <p><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></p> <p>

"…a historical adventure featuring a young boy, Cedric, who leaves home to fight in the Crusades. The female characters in the story, Cedric's mother and his friend Margaret Fitz Maurice, are passive beings who wait patiently at home while Cedric and his comrades, who are brave, patriotic heroes, experience life-threatening adventures. For example, in the excitement of battle the soldiers' cries are heard:</p> <p><o:p></o:p></p> <p>

'If we die we do so knowing we have saved the army</p> <p><o:p></o:p></p> <p>

'We'll give them a taste of English steel.' "</p> <p><o:p></o:p></p> <p>

Stokes also did <i>_Fun at Cockatoo Island</i>_ and <i>_Pogl and Namja and the Dragon Goanna</i>_ , two comics in the <i>_Pacific Pictorial</i>_ series of at least 8 comics (c.1947-48). <i>_Pacific Pictorial</i>_ was a companion to <i>_Capers</i>_ , both being published by Lush Studios. Stokes, A. Lush and Des Conrades – who also did 2 comics – were the artists involved throughout. </p>
