painter, was presumably the artist mistakenly listed as Samuel 'B.’ Green in Waugh and Cox’s Sydney Directory for 1855 when living at 41 King Street East. Samuel E. Green was born in England and educated at Rugby, then ran away to sea and ended up in New South Wales. In 1861 he sailed from Sydney to New Zealand in charge of a cargo of horses for the Waikato War and did not return. Later that year he was in Otago, and he subsequently purchased land in Akatori. He died at Taieri.
A prolific artist, Green exhibited with the Otago Art Society in 1876-1904 and 1911-15 and is represented in various New Zealand public collections; watercolours of Southland and Otago are in the Hocken Library. Australian paintings are held privately in New South Wales.
