Teacher and designer, was listed as 'Inspector of School of Design in Victoria’ and 'Honorary Corresponding Member, Society of Arts, London’ in 1879 when his pamphlet Drawing Copies of Ornament based on the Plant Form[s?] of Australia (mentioned by Moore, SAA vol.1) was published by the Committee of the Artisans’ School of Design, Trades’ Hall, Melbourne. The 12 designs, each occupying a full page, employ mirror image symmetry around a central axis, with two of the designs – based on Eucalyptus odorata and Xanthosia dissecta respectively – being highly stylised, the latter evocative of Christopher Dresser’s work. Praise from the Argus (17 July 1879) printed on the front cover states: 'The adaptation of the beautiful forms of the leaves and flowers of Australian plants to the purposes of decorative art has long been considered a desideratum’.
