Sanford Duryea was a professional photographer. He apparently worked with his brother Townsend Duryea in the Melbourne photographic studios of Messrs Duryea & McDonald (1852/1855). He also worked in Adelaide and Fremantle.
professional photographer, was born in New York, younger brother of Townsend Duryea, with whom he apparently worked in the Melbourne photographic studios of Messrs Duryea & McDonald from 1852 to 1855. He then joined Townsend in Adelaide and became a partner until he moved to Western Australia to work as a photographer, arriving at Fremantle aboard the Swan on 21 October 1857. He married Ellen Amelia Leeder in Perth on 18 March 1858; their son, Carlton Bennett, was born there the following year. The Duryeas left for Adelaide aboard the Champion on 11 November 1859 and Sanford resumed the partnership with his brother until 1863.
