painter, worked in England from about 1807 to 1849(?), chiefly as a portrait, game and animal painter, according to H2O (aka Fresh Water ), the Kerry Stokes miscellany catalogue, University of Western Australia, Perth, WA, 2000 (pp.49-50). Despite never coming to Australia, Taylor painted at least two almost identical views of Sydney Harbour (Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW and Kerry Stokes collection in WA), both oils dated 1813. They relate to a Wallis engraving of the same view published in London in 1814, except that the paintings have a large tree on the left hand side picturesquely framing the composition and the Stokes Collection painting uniquely has an additional isolated Aborigine in the mid-right. The view is of Port Jackson, probably from Vaucluse, and all versions include clusters of Aborigines in the foreground with both European sailing ships and Aboriginal craft in the harbour behind.
