sketcher, was evidently a member of the South Australian party which attempted to establish a settlement at Escape Cliffs, near the mouth of the Adelaide River on the northern coast of Australia, in 1864. The settlement was abandoned the following year. When Atkinson’s sketch, Encampment at Escape Cliffs, Palmerston , was reproduced in the Illustrated Melbourne Post on 25 August 1865 it was reported to have been 'taken on the spot’.
