art student, was probably born in Canada, one of the eight children of James Laidley and Eliza Jane, née Shepheard. She came to New South Wales with her parents in May 1827. On 27 October 1841 she married Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, a businessman and patron of the arts, at Christ Church of England, St Laurence, Sydney. They had at least five sons and three daughters. Mrs Mort took drawing lessons from Conrad Martens in 1846-47.
