painter, studied at the National Gallery Schools in Melbourne. In the late 1880s he was a member of the Heidelberg School. He rented a lodge in the garden of Charterisville in 1890 (see *Leon "Sonny" Pole* ). A large oil on canvas seascape signed 'Tom Humphey' was offered at Christie's _Australian and European Paintings, Drawings and Prints, Part 1_ , Melbourne, 29 April 1997, lot 77. Undated, it was probably painted in the late 1890s, after he had left Charterisville but before tuberculosis confined him to painting smaller, more intimate works. By the early 20th century he was better known as a portrait photographer, working out of a studio on Collins Street with his wife *Alice Mills*. ¶
