amateur photographer, was living in Ballarat West, Victoria, in 1864 when Frank Williams stole his photographic equipment and other possessions. The Victoria Police Gazette of 7 April 1864 stated that the stolen property consisted of: ’2 sets of photographic apparatus, one larger than the other, one marked with the maker’s name, Lerebour and Secretan, Paris; 3 lenses, 14 magic lantern slides, and a French microscope’. Books and other personal effects were also stolen, including Greek, Latin, French and Hebrew texts, which suggest that Ross may have been a teacher. Williams was apprehended and presumably Ross’s equipment was returned, but no photographs taken with it are known.
