Born in 1951 in Wollongong, NSW, de Mestre studied painting at The National Art School, Sydney, before gaining her Diploma of Teaching from Melbourne State College. In 1992 de Mestre received her Masters of Creative Arts, focusing on painting and textiles, from the University of Wollongong. She has also completed workshops in Australia, Canada and Germany.
In 1987 de Mestre was awarded a grant by the Australia Council for the Arts Crafts Board for an Overseas study tour of Museums and Textile Collections in the USA, UK and Europe. In 1991 the Visual Art and Crafts Board awarded de Mestre an Artist-in-Residence in the Northern Territory.
de Mestre is represented in many collections, including the University of Wollongong, Artbank, Melbourne University, Queen Victorua Art Gallery and Museum, The Australian Embassy in Washington DC and private collections in Australia, UK and Switzerland. de Mestre has completed many commissions, including work for Lismore Private Hospital, Liverpool Hospital and Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
