Trina Wilmot is a descendant of the Kokatha people in South Australia. One of eight children, Wilmot was born in Gawler (South Australia) and grew up on the edge of the Barossa Valley. Her father, Laurance Miles McNamara, was well known for his award-winning shearing including being the Australasian Shearing Champion in 1963. Her mother, Miriam Ruth McNamara, was an accomplished artist who painted in front of the Queen during the Jubilee visit.
Wilmot moved to East Gippsland in 1979. In 1999, she graduated from the Koori Art and Design course at East Gippsland TAFE. Wilmot is a multi-skilled artist and craftswoman working in a number of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, artefact making, wood burning, silk screening, jewellery making, egg carving and possum skin cloak making.
Wilmot’s bold work reflects her personality and incorporates distinctive Indigenous designs and markings and often unexpected colours. She has exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria and extensively through East Gippsland Aboriginal Arts Corporation. Her work is held in numerous collections such as the Koorie Heritage Trust, Bunjilaka at the Melbourne Museum and the Australian Print Making Workshop. A series of her work is on permanent display in the Bairnsdale Koori Court.
Wilmot is a popular art teacher and workshop facilitator based in Marlo in Far East Gippsland.
