Vanessa Berry’s career as a cartoonist began in her teenage years when she created Psychobabble , described at the time by Joan Kerr as “one of the longest established zines. It is full of good jokes, though 'it looks terrible and hasn’t really improved in the few years it has been coming from Vanessa’s bedroom’.”
Her interest in noting the small places and odd details of the city was observed in her blog, Mirror Sydney, which she began in 2012 and was later published in book form. She moves easily between whimsical drawn maps and writing of the strangeness of the often overlooked.
Kerr’s fascination with her, and her speculation that she may be connected to a long-lost woman cartoonist, led to a 2015 exhibition at Cross Arts with Raquel Ormella – Joan Kerr and the Mysterious Vanessa.
