W. Bennett practiced the interesting skill of engrossing whereby one copies writing in large, uniform characters. His exhibited works however featured chalk drawings and oil painting.

painter, illuminator and engrosser, showed two chalk drawings, Memory and Religion , at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. An oil painting, Autumn , was shown in 1869 at both the Ballarat and Geelong Mechanics Institute exhibitions, along with an example of 'illuminated writing’ at the latter.
