sketcher, showed Sleeping Child in the first exhibition of the South Australian Society of Arts at Adelaide in 1857. W. Opie, said to be 'of Adelaide’, does not appear to be the same person as Edward Andrew Opie , who had two pictures exhibited as 'formerly of Adelaide’ in the same exhibition. The artist may be William Opie, who was living in the Adelaide suburb of Tusmore with his wife, Edith (c.1813-71), in 1849 when their daughter, possibly the subject of the drawing, was born.
