sketcher, drew scenes of Australia and New Zealand in the 1850s and 1860s that were reproduced in the Illustrated London News . He prepared illustrations of Canada and possibly South Africa for the same journal. Known watercolours of Australian subjects include View of Sydney, New South Wales (1851), The Geelong and Melbourne Railway, Geelong Terminus (1859) and King George’s Sound , Western Australia (1853). Another group dated 1859 includes other scenes in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia (York 1857, Fremantle 1859). Despite the pictorial evidence, it is unlikely that Hatton ever visited Australia, merely worked up other people’s sketches or photographs in London.
