Painter, joined Sir John Longstaff in living and working in a studio at Elizabeth Bay House in the 1930s after the house had been purchased by the Bank of New Zealand (in 1932) and before it was converted into 16 'bed-sit’ flats furnished with antiques (in 1941). A photograph of Thornton painting in his Elizabeth Bay House studio was published in the Sydney Morning Herald in July 1935 (reproduced insites winter 2003, p.6). He and Wolfgang Cardamatis, another young studio occupant, were renowned for the fabulous parties they held there.
