Weaver Hawkins b. 28 August 1893

One of the great advocates for contemporary art in New South Wales. After he was left on the Western Front in World War I, he rehabilitated himself to paint with his left arm. He left England in the 1920s and travelled widely before settling in Sydney in 1935 where he actively supported younger artists in experimenting with modern art.

Description

The Art Gallery of New South Wales began in the 1870s as an aspect of the Academy of Art. Later it became known as the National Art Gallery of NSW. This name persisted beyond Federation in 1901. It was given its present name in 1958.
It remains the principal collecting and exhibiting body in NSW and is governed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Act of 1980.
