Arriving in Melbourne in the 1860s, William Bear quickly found himself employment as a photographer with William Insull Burman before setting up his own photography studio.

professional photographer, son of Jonathan Bear and Mary Ann, née Hefferd, was born in London. He was in Melbourne working as a photographer for William Insull Burman at Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, when he married Burman’s daughter, Emily Jane, in November 1868. He continued to work with Burman & Sons at various addresses, operating their Carlton Portrait Rooms at 221 Lygon Street from 1873. From 1877 to 1882 he was listed at 145 Smith Street, Fitzroy – apparently the Burmans’ Fitzroy Portrait Rooms, although Alan Davies has recorded a carte-de-visite identifying Bear in his own photographic practice at 60 Moorabool Street, Geelong.
