drawing student, was the sole technical drawing pupil in Joseph Fowles 's class at the Sydney School of Arts in 1858. According to the Sydney Morning Herald of 3 February 1859, when prizes were being awarded to successful candidates at the annual class examinations: 'Only one pupil of the architectural drawing class presented himself for examination, consequently there was no competition and no prize awarded. This being the case, Mr. Fowles, the conductor of the class, himself presented a prize to his pupil, William Cassells.’
