professional photographer, worked in the Bathurst area of New South Wales in 1862-66 employing the popular phrase 'secure the shadow ere the substance fade’ as his photographic slogan. In 1866 he was in partnership with Mr Barker at a studio in William Street, Bathurst; the following year he was listed as sole proprietor. He then left Bathurst for a year, returning in late 1868 to set up a temporary wooden hut in George Street where he was planning to take photographs for three weeks only. The building was almost immediately destroyed by a hurricane. Nevertheless, George remained in George Street (presumably in more durable premises), transferring to the studio previously occupied by Edward Hollege , also in George Street, in 1870. Later that year he moved to Sydney and found employment with Freeman Brothers .
George was listed as proprietor of a studio at 70 Botany Street, Sydney in 1886 but, if not carried on in addition to his Freeman work (perhaps by his son, Eden George ), this was short-lived. W.R. George soon returned to his old firm, became the proprietor of Freeman & Co. in George Street, Sydney in 1895 and remained there until he retired in 1900.
