painter, produced transparencies to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Melbourne. The Argus of 27 November 1867 reported that one 'designed and executed by Mr William Handcock, a student of the Royal Academy’, extended the length of the upper storey of the Crystal Palace Hotel in Bourke Street and depicted the governor welcoming the Prince and the Galatea to Victoria flanked by kangaroos and emus. The same day the Age reported that 'Hancock’ had produced a transparency for the Golden Fleece Hotel in Russell Street.
