professional photographer, was employed by the photographers Duryea & McDonald at 3 Bourke Street East, Melbourne, in 1853. He then moved to Tasmania and established his own photographic business in Patterson Street, Launceston in 1855. Returning to Victoria, he worked in Ballarat and other inland towns until setting up at 7 Collins Street East, Melbourne in 1860-62 as W.J. Stubbs, 'Daguerrean and photographic artist’.
William Stubbs, artist, was at 88 Argyle Street, Fitzroy, between 1863 and 1866, according to Sands & McDougall’s Melbourne Directory , but this must have been his private address. According to biographical notes published in 1893, Stubbs was working about this time for Batchelder & O’Neill in Collins Street. He purchased the Batchelder firm from Botterill , Dunn and Wilson in about 1868 and continued there until 1889, when he retired. A beautiful opal glass portrait by Stubbs of the botanical artist Ellis Rowan (NLA) must date from the 1870s.
