Having moved to Australia, he married Bridget Ann Buckley at St. Patrick’s Church in Adelaide, South Australia on 15 September 1862. Bridget had came to Australia with her parents, John, Mary and Brothers Patrick, and John and sister Mary from Limerick Ireland.
William and Bridget had 8 children: William John Newport (1864 – 1937),
Ellen Jane Newport (1866 – 1935), Mary Ann Newport (1868 – 1932), George Sylvanus Newport (1871 – 1921), Margaret Eliza “Maggie” Newport (1873 – 1943), Rosina (Rose) Newport (1875 – 1929), Alice Newport (1878 – 1953) and
