William Ricketts is well-known for his handmodelled ceramic sculptures and vessels with modelled heads and figures of Aboriginals. He valued the spirituality of the Aboriginal people and their way of life and attempted to represent this in his ceramics.
ceramicist. 1912 apprenticed as a jeweller. 1920 started modelling clay at his home and for the Australian Porcelain Company. Moved to Mt Dandenong in about 1935, calling his property Potters Sanctuary, renaming it Mt Dandenong in about 1942. Well-known for his handmodelled ceramic sculptures and vessels with modelled heads and figures of Aboriginal people. According to his biographer, Peter Brady, Spencer and Gillen’s The Arunta: A Study of Stone Age Man (1927) took him on a life-long mission to value the spirituality of Aboriginal people and their way of life.
