Born "in the bush" Lima N.T. around 1935, Warlpiri artist Peggy Rockman "never saw white people when she was little". She learnt English while working as the Lajamanu school cleaner and took up painting in 1986.

Though an older woman who “never saw white people when she was little”, Peggy Rockman learnt English while working as the school cleaner, an occupation she had for many years. Visiting anthropologists and others now make use of her skill to translate for them.
