topographical artist, entered the British Navy as a Captain’s servant in 1780, saw action against the French in 1782 and was promoted lieutenant in 1789. He served as first lieutenant aboard George Vancouver’s HMS Discovery for five years (1790-95) as it sailed to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and the northwest of North America. Mudge was one of four naval artists on board and one of his drawings, The Discovery on the Rocks in Queen Charlotte’s Sound (1792?) had an engraving made from it by B.T. Pouncy for George Vancouver’s A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World (vol.1, 1798) after it had been redrawn by W. Alexander (both included in Hirst).
