drawing teacher, took over the drawing classes at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts from Charles Rodius in August 1849. The Sydney Morning Herald noted that Hutton would be delivering the School’s 'first lecture on mechanics’ on 25 August 1849. In 1851 it was reported that the drawing class consisted of forty pupils who, 'under the careful tuition of Mr Hutton, are generally making very fair progress’. At a meeting of the institute in 1853, however, it was stated that Hutton had 'failed to carry out his engagement with [the] Class Committee in forming classes for Drawing’ and a motion was carried that his position be declared vacant and advertised. He seems only to have taught 'mechanical’ (technical) drawing.
