art student, exhibited with the NSW Academy of Art in 1879: W.T. Butler showed Gladiator , two studies from a cast (crayons) and was awarded a certificate of merit ( Sydney Mail , 2 August 1879). Exhibited as a student of the NSW Academy of Art at the Garden Palace in February 1880: “Among the best are those by Mr W.T. Butler (no.1466) ... includes a back view of The Fighting Gladiator , one of the most difficult positions to successfully reproduce faithfully in consequence of the seeming disproportionate size of the foot nearest the spectator” ( Sydney Mail , 28 February 1880, p.406).

Exhibited in the 1880 art students’ exhibition of the NSW Academy of Art and won the Academy’s Certificate of Merit for “Portraits from Life, Crayons, time sketch 4 hours”. He also won an Honorable Mention for his 'Time Sketches from Life, Half hour, hands’ ( Sydney Morning Herald , 12 November 1880, p.6). At the ninth annual meeting of the NSW Academy of Art in November 1880, it was reported that an Academy silver medal was awarded to W. G. (sic) Butler – Studies from Cast, Torso of Venus ( Sydney Morning Herald , 12 November 1880, p.6). The error was later corrected: “W.T. Butler has been awarded the silver medal for a Torso of Venus , one of the most excellent things in this class” (i.e. Study from the Cast) ( Sydney Morning Herald , 24 November 1880, p.3).

Exhibited in third annual exhibition of the Art Society of NSW: “W. Butler has several works, among them being a good portrait in crayon” ( Sydney Morning Herald , 21 March 1883, p.11).
