professional photographer, was practising as a 'photographic artist’ in Collins Street, Melbourne in January 1862 when his wife, Essex Scott, was charged with ill-treating a child, 15-year-old Catherine Keeley who had been engaged from the Bombay Orphan Asylum when the Scotts were living in India three years earlier. The charge was dismissed. He may be the W.J. Scott who in 1869 took over the photography and electroplating firm of James Stewart 'near the Turkish Baths, Harrington Street, Hobart Town’.
