David is a graduate from Monash University (Caulfield) in Art and Design (graphics) 1975. At the same time David was developing his own painting, exhibiting in Melbourne and winning some awards. In 1980 David was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study murals, ancient and contemporary in Europe, Mexico and USA . He has also been commissioned to create various slab-glass windows and maintains a photographic and video practice.
David commenced mural work with renowned mural artist Harold Freedman at his studio in 1973, where he was one of Harold's assistants for over 13 years working on most of Harold's most notable murals including History of Transport Mural (painted), The Geelong Regional History (mosaic), The Legend of Fire (mosaic), History of Australian Horse Racing (painted) and the Rosati mosaic floors. Gaining invaluable experience in areas such as researching, concept development, mural painting and mosaic creating methods on a huge scale.
In 1989 David Jack co-founded the Melbourne Mural Studio P/L to undertake public art commissions. Notably concluding the final panels of the painted History of Australian Horse Racing at Flemington(Melb), Skygarden Mosaics & Chifley Tower mosaics in Sydney, Australia on Collins in Melbourne & the Civil Aviation Authority Historical Painted Mural for their foyer in Canberra.
David single handedly created the Underwater Mural 30 metres across in 2004.
More recently he created the Flightline of F4e Phantoms at Pt Cook RAAF Base (and museum) some 8 metres across.
