Biography

Bernadette Smith is an artist now based in Sydney, Australia. Her art practice includes painting, photography, film and cultural critique. For many years she has worked within the environment movement and is currently the official photographer for Stop CSG Sydney. She has lectured full time at Singapore’s National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University and part-time in art theory and photography at Charles Darwin University and the University of Newcastle. Her works are included in the ARCO Experimental Cinema Library, Madrid, Spain; the Australian National Film Archive; Kodak Photography Collection, Sydney; Bibliotheque Nationale, France; Fotogalerie Kommunale Friedrichshain, Berlin and the State Library of New South Wales. She has published articles in Australian Fabian News, the Guardian and other progressive journals. Her most recent article “Australian Art Responses to the GFC” appears in Issue 132 of Arena magazine. Bernadette's painting has been selected for the Mosman Art Prize, the Florence Biennale and the 2014 Fisher's Ghost Art Award at Cambelltown Art Centre. She is represented by Graphis Art Gallery in Woolahra, Sydney.
