Charles Conder b. 24 October 1868

Painter Charles Conder is best known in Australia for his association with the Heidelberg School and his involvement with the famous 9 x 5 Impressions Exhibition of 1889. A bohemian, England-born Conder worked largely in Paris and London where he mixed with literary and artistic greats including the likes of Oscar Wilde, Audrey Beardsley and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

    Description

    The Art Gallery of New South Wales began in the 1870s as an aspect of the Academy of Art. Later it became known as the National Art Gallery of NSW. This name persisted beyond Federation in 1901. It was given its present name in 1958.
    It remains the principal collecting and exhibiting body in NSW and is governed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Act of 1980.
