Peter Rushforth b. 4 December 1920

Peter Rushforth's pots are a synthesis of European and Japanese aesthetic influences. He came to an appreciation of the Japanese Mingei (folk) aesthetic in unusual circumstances as a prisoner of war in Singapore during the 1939-45 War. Later he became one of the nation's most influential ceramics teachers.

    Description

    The Art Gallery of New South Wales began in the 1870s as an aspect of the Academy of Art. Later it became known as the National Art Gallery of NSW. This name persisted beyond Federation in 1901. It was given its present name in 1958.
    It remains the principal collecting and exhibiting body in NSW and is governed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales Act of 1980.

    Description

    The VCA Art Collection spans the entire history of the College and its predecessor, the National Gallery School of Art (first opened in 1867).

    Comprising painting, sculpture, photography and works on paper, most works are by students, staff or alumni.

    DAAO has a separate entry for The Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramics Collection. It was bequeathed to the VCA Collection in 2004.

    Note

    The Margaret Lawrence Australian Ceramics Collection (MLACC) is an extensive collection of Australian ceramics with work dating from the 1920s until 2005, the time of Margaret Lawrence’s death at the age of 90. Bequeathed to the Victorian College of the Arts, the MLACC consists of over 2,000 pieces and is regarded as one of the largest private collections of Australian ceramics in the country.

    The Etta Hirsh Ceramics Collection – La Trobe University Art Collection, from Etta and Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Hirsh and family. Manny named it in honour of his wife.

    Leading Ceramicists include Noel Flood, Les Blakebrough, David and Hermia Boyd, Victor Greenaway, Harold Hughan, Col Levy, Mirka Mora, Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Peter Rushforth.
