Rex Heathcote established Rex Heathcote Furniture in Launceston in 1986, after taking over the family furniture business following his return from London in 1980. His business focused upon making high-quality furniture pieces using local materials and working with local employees. Larger items were made first and their offcuts provided materials for smaller pieces. Workers were drawn from the local community and trained within the company.
As well as designing items himself, Heathcote involved other designers as clients or as suppliers of ideas, and also manufactured designs under license. Heathcote’s work was included in the Powerhouse Museum exhibition 'Smart works: design and the handmade’ (2007).
Rex Heathcote Furniture was closed in 2011.
